/Sam Taylor Wood: Soliloquy Series

From a series of photographs she created in 1998. Echoing a common Renaissance format, Taylor Wood focuses on a central image, here inspired by a famous painting, and places a predella panel underneath. These smaller images are meant to illustrate the inner fantasy life of the figure in the main picture.

The photographs featured here are based on Henry Wallis’ Death of Chatterton from 1854, one of the most famous Victorian paintings found at the Tate Gallery; the sumptuous foreshortening of Andrea Mantegna’s Dead Christ; and a model reclining in the pose from Velásquez's Rokeby Venus.
