Christina Voss has been discussing in Erotica Curiosa, the various renderings of Danae. Danae was imprisoned in a tower by her father, the King of Argos. Zeus enters the chamber by disguising himself as shower of golden rain and impregnates her. This study for Danae is far more explicit than the final painting, which uses Danae's facial expression to convey the depths of her fulfillment.
