Tale of an Osaka Love Thief

Jake Clennell's documentary The Great Happiness Space follows the lives of the 'host boys' at the Cafe Rakkyo, in Osaka. Host boys are paid by women to provide the illusion of a relationship, which may or may not be sexual.  There's a little seduction, a lot of drinking, and both genuine and disingenuous conversation.  I watched it out of curiosity, because I was interested in this host boy phenomenon, but I had no idea that the documentary would be so poignant, complex, and absorbing as it was.  I don't want to give away too much, but I'll say that the documentary is paced beautifully, slowly peeling back each layer until what remains is a sensitive, complex, sometimes heartbreaking portrait of human relationships.

You can watch it online at Netflix, or on the Sundance Channel on Wednesday, October 8, 2008 at 2:40AM.
